Gun Safes

Gun safes come in all sizes and configurations, and run the gamut of ratings and the degree of protection provided.

Recently there have been a number of units advertised at some of the “big box” hardware and sporting goods store at very low prices. Care should be taken when considering these lower cost gun safes to be sure they are labeled for the protections they say they will provide, many of these units are little more than a tin box.

There are gun safes available that will provide some fire protection, however be sure of what you are getting. Because moisture would present a rust problem for guns, fire labeled gun safes are insulated with a dry fill mix or just drywall. They are usually rated and labeled by either the manufacturer or a third party testing company, it is unusual to find a gun safe with a UL® label for fire.

Gun safes also run the gamut for burglary ratings, anything from a “B” rate lockbox to a virtual armory. The units that are UL® labeled for burglary tend to be very heavy, quite large and expensive.
